What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is excessively present in cannabis and hemp plants. It is one of over 100 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. Another of these compounds that you may have heard of is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the compound that creates the high that has made cannabis so famous. But what is the difference between hemp and marijuana?

What is hemp?

The word ‘hemp’ is quite trending on the market. It feels like every other product has the word “hemp” in its name. But do you actually know what hemp is?

Industrial hemp is a member of the cannabis plant family, but it because the THC level in hemp is very low, it is not consumed as a recreational drug. As mentioned, most CBD products are made using hemp. Hemp consists of a sufficient amount of CBD, but its users have never experienced a ‘high’ as CBD is really low in the psychoactive properties.

Unlike CBD, THC is an intoxicating compound and famous for causing the high related to marijuana use. It’s found in all cannabis plants, including hemp, but at very low levels. The federal law defines industrial hemp as cannabis plants having less than 0.3% THC. This amount is not even near to get a consumer high.

What about marijuana?

Contrary to dog hemp oil, marijuana contains larger levels of THC, more than 30% THC, making this plant more potent for creating the high associated with marijuana use.

The high concentration of THC in marijuana causes a ‘high,’ including a feel of relaxation and euphoria. There are some medicinal uses for marijuana, though it is mainly used for recreational purposes.

There are many species of marijuana, such as indica, sativa and ruderalis varieties. The effects produced by each type of marijuana will depend on the species and strain. There are currently over 800 different species-strain combinations of marijuana, whereas there are much smaller amount of hemp strains commercially available.

Is hemp oil for people and hemp oil for dogs the same?

First, let’s give a quick explanation as to what hemp oil is. It’s pretty easy to guess. It is hemp extract that has been mixed with a carrier oil. Because it is an oil, there are a lot of different ways you can take it and use it. You can take it directly, mix it with food, or rub it directly on the skin.

So, now that we’ve covered that, let’s talk about human hemp oil and dog hemp oil. To answer the question straight away, sometimes they are the same. There are three different kinds of hemp oil, each has a different number of cannabinoids in it. They are full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate. Full spectrum has all of the cannabinoids found in hemp, broad spectrum has all but the THC, and CBD isolate has nothing but CBD.

Humans can use all three of these. As briefly touched on, the THC in hemp is not enough to cause any sort of high. However, any amount of THC could be toxic to dogs. So, dog hemp oil is generally either broad spectrum or CBD isolate. Usually, it is CBD isolate, as broad spectrum can sometimes be too strong for dogs.
